All in all, I feel like these were a good first go, but I need to resolve the exterior on the next round. I'm hoping I can get these through in time to take them home to my mom for the holidays - I've owed her some bowls for ages now.

Bowls!
It's official - bowls are an entirely different beast when it comes to decoration. Give me a convex cup or a slightly concave plate and I'm good to go, but a deep bowl??!! Using my paper stencils was definitely a challenge inside these bowls - they really wanted to buckle and distort as I wet them. I'm also not as thrilled with the farm field texture on the exterior of these pots - I feel like they need something else on the outside. Creating that pattern is so meditative for me, I'd love to come up with some others that I feel are as effective. The farm field works so well because it ties into both my thoughts on food and consumption and the whole idea of energy as ethanol. I've been racking my brain for another pattern that can say as much as simply, but nothing has struck yet... any ideas for me??

they are beauties..my favorite is the whale..but that is just as of right now. they are both sweet...paper stencils, eh?..i would like to see the technique. if you ever want to do a trade, let me know. i love your work.

When you say exterior are you talking about the outside of the bow? Will it just be glazed in clear allowing the red to show through?
If that's the case I think the exterior serves as a frame for your wonderful drawings. I enjoy the starkness & the sparse use of color.
I also like the small juice cups. It'd be fun to have a handle on each side like a kid's 'sippy' cup.
I'm rambling - but I think you should do a happy dance at your first pass!

Jeff -- I would be happy to post my stencil process, it could be a bit though as I'm getting booted out of the studio until January (classes are almost over). I may get in a few more pieces though. (And I would LOVE to do a trade at some point - hopefully I'll have some pots actually glazed soon!)
Judy -- I was talking about the outside of the bowl - it feels in such strong contrast to the interior, I wonder if it needs just a touch of something else. I was planning on a clear glaze - I really enjoy the richness of the red. I like the idea of a frame for the drawings - maybe I should just leave these and see how they look once glazed...
Hi Kip - LOVE your work! I was on Judy Shreve's blog and saw the link to your site, followed it here and fell in awe of your pieces. I love to draw on my pots too, but it's sooooo time-consuming. Am still working on trying to integrate it all into a studio practice that makes sense with time and resources.
Hi Kip, came across your blog via critique my pot. I love the everyday objects on your cups, bowls and plates and the juxtaposition combinations. For the bowls I like the contrast between the outside and the inside. Would also love to see your paper stencil technique. Looking forward to seeing the glazing.
Field pattern is great - they're made of red mud, so what better place to look for inspiration? It works for me. Lovely work, really unusual and striking.
